Nathan Brown

Nathan Brown

R. Nathan Brown is an emerging young tenor that takes pride in his versatility as both an educator and artist. Nathan is currently finishing up a DMA in Vocal Performance and Pedagogy at the University of Iowa, where he also completed an MA in Vocal Performance. But his musical journey started at the humble age of 3, when he began singing along to his mother’s cleaning music with sheet music firmly in hand. Nathan could not read yet, but it mattered not.

Growing up, Nathan participated in choral and theater opportunities both in and out of school, preparing him for an undergraduate career in music at Murray State University. He participated in the All-State Honors Chorus the maximum years possible while in High School and performed with the All-Collegiate Honors chorus while studying in Kentucky. Nathan also was a finalist many times in NATS regional competitions in both the Classical and Musical Theater Category. He also participated in Young Artist training programs while in undergrad which helped him to develop a love and appreciation for operatic singing. In December of 2017, Nathan graduated with this BME in Music Education and began his teaching career in Illinois at Belleville West High School shortly after. Here he developed his passion for teaching ALL singers, fostering a love and appreciation for singing at every level of ability and in every style imaginable.

Nathan is also an instrumentalist and composer when he happens to have some free time. He was a member of the 2015 Spirit of Atlanta Drum and Bugle Corps for their competition season, much to the consternation of his voice teachers. However his much improved skill in breath control and stage movement did help to convince them of his choice. Nathan also participated in the International Competition of Collegiate Acapella circuit with Murray State’s group EQ Blu, where he was the lead arranger for many of their pop arrangements. He also has written several song cycles that have been written for and premiered by many dear friends.

When Nathan is not pursuing his passion as a music educator, he is at home lounging with his cat and playing Stardew Valley or going out to play billiards with his partner. He and his partner aren’t particularly good, but it’s fun all the same.
