Ben Tinsman

Ben Tinsman

Ben Tinsman began playing piano at the age of 8. He originally wanted to be a drummer, and his school required all percussionists to have two years of piano experience. While this requirement prompted his first piano lessons, his love for the instrument and quick learning ability kept him attached to the piano ever since the start. Ben studied with long-time local piano instructor Marilyn Mitchem for most of his youth until her retirement. Finishing out high school, Ben studied with Dr. Charles Schmidt, Piano Professor at Augustana College.

While he never ended up a percussionist, Ben has been surrounded by music his entire life. He picked up the trumpet in 5th grade, eventually joining the Quad City Youth Symphony during his high school years. An avid singer, Ben went from becoming an Iowa high school All State singer to participating in the University of Iowa’s graduate choir during his undergraduate years. During his time at Iowa, Ben continued studying piano and received a Music Minor along with his Finance degree.
